Portrait 2

Portrait 2

This is another coloured pencil portrait that took about four hours to complete.  This is a portrait of the lead singer of Panic! At The Disco, Brenden Urie.  I don't like to do backgrounds for pictures so I got done as much as I had wanted to.  The photograph that I was looking at for reference had him wearing a slightly different shirt that I didn't think would look good in this sketch so I found a different picture to look at for the shirt.  Portraits are always my most rigorous projects because they are so time-consuming and have so much detail involved.

Doodle For Google

Doodle For Google

This piece took me about 45 minutes to complete with coloured pencils and a pen outline.  Google was asking for what you think the future will look like, since their examples were flying cars and robot future, I assumed that they wanted very distant future.  I don't have the most optimistic view for that far into the future so my doodle for Google is more of a dystopian future.  The "G" is a burned, ripped, dirty kids stuffed rabbit toy.  The first "o" is a bloodied bandage over an arm or a leg.  The second "o" is a burning fire.  The "g" is an old fashion WWII style gas mask.  The "l" is a destroyed burning building.  The "e" is supposed to look like a stamp or graffiti.  The theme would be dystopian future or post-apocalyptic.  I wanted to do a bit more detailing on the smoggy sky and dark ground but I didn't want to mix it too much with the letters themselves so I changed that and just did a dark colour mix with more of a grey and red at the top and some greens for the ground.  As much as I like the dystopian future idea, I don't draw it very much.  I liked learning to do the more rugged edges of things and torn/used style.

Portrait

This piece took me about four hours with coloured pencils.  It is a portrait of a youtuber, Nathan Sharp.  I was trying to get this piece to look as realistic as possible, the main challenge was doing his hair. I finished what I wanted, I don't like adding backgrounds to portraits.  I started to do a different picture of him, but I had a hard time with parts of it, so I changed my idea a bit and used a different picture for reference.  I think it was very successful.  This is one of my better portrait pieces, I think.  I've always had a hard time with ears, since he has gauges it added another layer of difficulty but I think I managed to do it pretty well. Portraits are always very rigorous because it takes a really long time to get the shading just right, but if you over shade it looks too fake.

Non Objective

Non-Objective

I used black out lining pens and sharpies to do this piece.  I did a combination of round flowery lines and straight blocky shapes to do this piece. This took me a little over an hour to do because it was hard to overlap things correctly without using a pencil first.   This was just a random, floral piece.  It fits the assignment because it's just random shapes and lines that meld together, it doesn't really make anything.  I filled most of the page which is what I wanted to do so I'd say I completed what I wanted to do.  My idea didn't change too much.  After a little while, I realised that I was using the same shapes over and over again and had to look for more pattern ideas.  I think this was really successful.  I like to do black and white pen things and the lines in this look really clean and straight.  It looks good.  It wasn't too terribly rigorous because I didn't do much more than draw lines.  The most rigorous part was just finding a variety of ideas and layering things well.

Still Life and Aberrant Scale

Still Life and Aberrant Scale

I did this piece with coloured pencils.  I originally filled most of the page with a rubber band ball.  To make it look huge I added a small desk with a chair and a ceiling light.  I finished it by adding a little bit of shading for shadows. I wanted the sketch to be pretty simple.  I didn't want to add a whole room or any other objects. The rubber band ball is my still life piece, the chair and the light are there to make the rubber band ball look huge.  I had originally only wanted to do the rubber band ball but I added the other objects to fill the requirement.  It actually looks pretty cool so I think the project was a success, I usually draw cartoons or realistic portraits so drawing still life was kind of a challenge.  I had to redo it a couple times to get shadows and angles right.  It was relatively rigorous because the rubber bands are hard to follow so there was a lot of going back and fixing lines that I didn't realise connected.

Repetition

Repetition

I did this piece using alcohol based markers. I drew a simple human skull with multiple butterflies on or around it.  It took me around two hours to finish this project. I was trying to make this project dark with a slight 'beauty' element, hence the butterflies.  This is a repetition piece because there are multiple butterflies and they are all the same type of butterfly.  I pretty much finished what I had planned to do.  It would have been nice to have a few other butterflies, but I also think that would make the sketch too crowded.  I knew I wanted to do the skull but I wasn't sure what I wanted to put around it. After scrolling through Pinterest I saw some cool pictures of skulls with butterflies that I liked and decided to go with that.  I think the project was pretty successful.  The markers I was using were pretty new so I learned a lot about how to use them.  They are pretty different than Copic markers, which I have used before.  The project was pretty rigorous because I had to test the markers before I used them each time to check how they would blend together and how the colour transferred to the special marker paper I was using.

Custom Playing Card

Custom Playing Card
I did this playing card digitally using Inkscape.  The card I was assigned was the Jack of Hearts.  After much debate over how to complete this card I realized that my favouriteYoutubers' name is Jack, and he is known for playing a game where hearts paly a large role.  It would fit the assignment perfectly.  I did a cartoon version of him surrounded by the coloured hearts from the game.  This card took around three hours to complete.  I had hoped to get a bit more shading done but I was having some trouble with the computer program and didn't manage to get that done.  I just layered the colours a bit more to compensate for the lack of actual shading, this was the only big change to my idea. I think this card was very successful.  I was really happy with how it turned out.  When I use Inkscape I will usually sketch out my first ideas on the program itself, this time I sketched it out on paper first and then scanned that into the computer.  This really helped a lot and I learned how to layer my lines better to get smoother edges.  This project was pretty rigorous because Inkscape is a rather difficult program to work with.  I had to redo a lot of my work in order to get it exactly how I wanted.

Update after 3+ years

Hello, this has been the blog I have used for my all my art classes in high school.  Everything posted above this post is from my senior year, which is an AP Studio Art class.  Everything posted below is from either freshman year or sophomore year when I took a photography class.  I don't want to delete the old stuff when I use this for a new class because it's cool to see my old photos or old pictures of my friends.

Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams was born in San Fransisco, California in 1902.   Adams was an only child and his family lost a lot of money in the 1907 Bankers Panic, his father spent a lot of time trying to restore his families fortune and his mother spent time worrying about Ansel's father.   Adams had trouble in school and was diagnosed as hyperactive and dyslexic.   His father and aunt tutored him at home and his finished school up to eighth grade at Mrs. Kate M. Wilkins Private School.   Adams taught himself how to play the piano but later gave that up for photography.   he did, however use the skills he learned from piano to help with photography techniques.
Adams first used a Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie camera that  he received from his parents.  Adams loved nature and became the “keeper” at LeConte Memorial Lodge in Yosemite.   that is where he met his wife Virginia Best, he married her in 1928 and they had two children.   the Sierra club played a valuable role in Adams success, his first photographs appeared in their bulletin in 1922.   He had his first one man exhibition at their headquarters in San Francisco.   Adams created  Monolith, the Face of Half Dome in 1927.   People compared his photography of the park to Homer's epic, Odysseus.
Later adams did photograph for a wide rangeof clients.   Anyone from Kodak, IBM, and AT&T to Life, Fortune, and Arizona Highways magazines.   Adams started to write an autobiography but was unable to finish it when he died in 1984.   His autobiography was later finished by his editor, Mary Street Alinder.   This included almost 100,000 letters and notes he wrote during his life.   People have later written biography's on Adams, but no one has ever written a biography that covered his entire life.
I chose his sand dune picture because the black and super light grey has an amazing contrast.   Your eyes are instantly drawn to the deep black on the left side of the screen then subconsciously move with the waves of the sand.   it gives it a very cool texture.   the grey on top sort of ads to the picture because it creates a great background.   It's such a soft color that it doesn't draw your attention away from the main focus of the picture.

I chose this photo because it is the inside of the T.A.R.D.I.S. from doctor who.   i actually think this might be a sort of museum or something dedicated to the show because you can see the outside of the T.A.R.D.I.S. on the side of the photo.   i love the picture because the T.A.R.D.I.S. is "bigger on the inside" and a panoramic photo shows that really well.

i chose this photo because it is i\the inside of a space shuttle.   I love astronomy and anything relating to it.   the inside of a shuttle is very small and this lays it out really well.    also like how the photo bends and you can see what is on the sides like it is the front.

Hi, my name is Derek, not that you really care, I'm a therapist, not that you care, I'm great at my job too, not that you care.   No one cares, and no ones pays attention or knows what I do for them, but hey, that's life.   As a therapist I do a lot of things for people, with little to no thanks, no pay, and no appreciation.   People might lean against me and talk about their problems when no one is around, I listen, and I care about them, but I will never talk back to them or offer the advice that is tearing at my mind.   "Don't listen to them."   "You are beautiful, no matter what he says."   "Just be yourself.   They will love you for you are."   "Be the better person, apologies to her."   "Talk t your teacher, get help on your homework."   I feel I could really help, but at the same time, if I answered, I fear they won't come back.   Other times I might provide anger management therapy.   People will kick me, or throw stuff at me, or hit me with their fists, it's hurts a little, but not much.   And I know it helps to clear your head and calm down, and I am happy to be there.   And I do a lot of other things as a therapist.   I might offer shelter so someone may cry in peace and not be disturbed, or a safe place to read or draw where you won't be judged. You can  cry when your favorite character dies, or fangirl over your favorite show, I understand.
I had a fairly average family.   I was married at one point, but she left me and took our two kids, that was years ago.    (Don't ask my how a wall has kids, trust me, you don't want to know.)   I don't see much of them anymore.   Her, I don't miss, we never really got along and we barely even spoke I don't know how we lasted that long. But it would be nice to see the kids every once in a while.   I wonder if they even remember me, they were both so young when she left and I'm sure she never talks about me.   Last  heard she was remarried to a man moved far away.   Most of my other family is gone, maybe dead maybe not.   We never really stayed in touch and they never told me anything.   I think my cousin recently got married, but I wasn't invited, not that i am surprised she never really liked me anyways, ever since we were kids.   I heard about the wedding from my brother.   We talk a little, not usually personal stuff, mostly the weather or sports.   He is a huge wall ball fan, though I don't really see that as a sport.   More like a form of torture.
My favorite pass time is observing people.   Not in a creepy stalker way you might be thinking, more like one might observe birds or nature.   Being a wall it's not like I can do much or go anywhere and I have no friends to spend my time with.   So I watch the people, talking together and being happy.   It's similar to, but much better than my actual job, and it's a lot less depressing.   I hear a lot of things about people because no one ever seems to notice that I am even there.   it is especially good to see my regular therapy patients when they are happy.   Like I did my job and they are able to move on with their lives.   I like to hear about their lives, their friend and weekend plans.   Things I dream of doing one day, if I can ever escape from here.
I'm not completely useless, and watching people isn't the only thing I do.   No one knows this, not even my family, but I like to paint.   You have possibly seen my work, I hope you have.   I paint those little things that seem to just show up.  On the sidewalk, the walls, the tables.   I paint at night so no one sees me, I don't want people to see me I want them to see the work but not who did it.   My work is good, and I a proud of it, on a personal level.   But if it is compared to something else, it isn't good enough.   I am often embarrassed by  it and by what people might think of it.   I don't even know why I am telling you this, I don't tell this to anybody.   I  just felt I needed to get it off my chest, uh, bricks.   Listening to everyone else's problems.  It's sort of easy to forget your own.   And then they just hit you, like a brick wall.
